Hawaiian Electric is dedicated to increasing the use of clean energy in Hawaii and reducing our dependence on imported oil. Our goal is to reach 100% renewable energy by 2045. Crude oil, gasoline, heating oil, diesel, propane, and other liquids, including biofuels and natural gas liquids, are all part of the equation. The Hawaiian Electric team is pleased to provide technical support to the Molokai Clean Energy Hui in its planning process to develop a portfolio of clean energy projects to achieve 100% renewable energy for the island that is feasible respectful of Molokai's culture and environment and with strong community support. It was the only coal-fired power plant in the state and provides approximately 16% of Oahu's electrical power during peak demand. Hawaiian Electric hopes to reduce initial barriers and complexities with a map that takes into account the technical and practical viability of microgrid development. The more renewable energy that comes into operation the less we will depend on imported oil and we will be tied to the price fluctuations associated with fossil fuels. Hawaiian Electric currently has four requests for proposals (RFPs) to identify new opportunities for renewable Energy projects on the island of Hawaii. Since March we have been contacting communities on the island to provide them with up-to-date information on current and future renewable Energy projects on the island of Hawaii. Hawaiian Electric and The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have identified locations on The islands with The right technical conditions for future renewable resources.
